The Crime Recording Rules promote a victim-oriented approach to crime recording. This means that a victim’s belief that a crime has occurred is, in most cases, enough to justify its recording as a crime. We inspect how well forces follow these rules.

HMICFRS, together with HM Inspectorate of Probation and HM Inspectorate of Prisons, published a joint report looking at whether prisons, police and probation, along with other agencies, had effectively delivered multi-agency public protection arrangements (MAPPA).

The Police National Computer is a national database of information available to all police forces throughout the United Kingdom. Information held on the Police National Computer allows police forces to carry out checks, for example, on a person’s criminal record or vehicle registration.

All places of detention must be inspected regularly to monitor treatment of, and conditions for, detainees. Our custody inspections inspect outcomes for detainees across all 43 police forces in England and Wales. We work alongside the Care Quality Commission to inspect health outcomes for detainees.

Building on experience from the police custody suite inspections, HMICFRS and HM Inspectorate of Prisons), introduced Terrorism Act (TACT) custody facilities inspections in England.
