Effectiveness, Fire & rescue services, Revisit  —

During our inspection of Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service, in November 2018, we identified a cause for concern about the service’s fire engine availability and whether its firefighters had the necessary safety critical skills to respond to emergencies. The service submitted an action plan setting out how it would address the cause for concern. This letter sets out the findings of our second revisit to review progress.

Child protection  —

Protecting children is one of the most important tasks the police undertake. Only the police can investigate suspected crimes, arrest perpetrators and monitor sex offenders. Police officers have the power to take a child who is in danger into a place of safety, or to seek an order to restrict an offender’s contact with children. The police service also has a significant role working with other agencies to ensure the child’s protection and well-being, longer term.

Child protection, Specialist inspection  —

Following high-profile reviews of the Metropolitan Police Service’s handling of historic allegations of sexual abuse, the Home Secretary asked HMICFRS to review the MPS’s progress against recommendations in these reviews. This report sets out the findings from this inspection.

Counter-terrorism  —

Prevent is one of four strands of CONTEST, the UK Government’s strategy for countering terrorism. It aims to tackle the causes of radicalisation, and support and safeguard those at risk of becoming radicalised. As such, the police have a critical role identifying people who are vulnerable to radicalisation and referring them for appropriate support.

Consultations, Corporate documents  —

This consultation is now closed. It asked for your views on HMICFRS’ proposed inspection programme for 2020/21. It was replaced in July 2020 with a revised consultation.

Child protection, Joint inspection  —

Between 20 and 24 January 2020, Ofsted, the Care Quality Commission, HMICFRS and HMI Probation undertook a joint inspection of the multi-agency response to children’s mental health in Bexley. This inspection included a ‘deep dive’ focus on the response to children’s mental health needs.

Speech  —

Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector spoke to HMICFRS staff at the virtual annual staff away day.

Criminal justice joint inspections, Custody suites  —

This inspection into Sussex is one of a series on police custody inspections carried out jointly by HMI Prisons and HMICFRS. The programme looks at strategy, treatment and conditions, individual rights and health care. It also contributes to the UK’s response to its international obligation to ensure regular and independent inspection of all places of detention.
