Collaboration, PEEL, Spotlight  —

Many police forces across England and Wales collaborate with neighbouring forces to share resources and core functions. This report sets out our findings on how forces collaborate in order to provide better, more efficient services to the public.

Roads policing, Thematic inspection  —

In this inspection we examined how effectively the road network of England and Wales is policed.

Consultations, Corporate documents  —

This consultation is now closed. This revised consultation on HMICFRS’s policing inspection programme and framework replaced the original consultation which was launched in March 2020. This new consultation took into account changes due to COVID-19.

PEEL, Spotlight, Thematic inspection  —

The control room is one of the engine rooms of a police force. If it doesn’t have the right systems and processes in place, the force won’t have an accurate picture of demand. This will affect its ability to respond to calls and investigate crimes effectively.

In this report, our findings highlight the challenges that the police service face in handling calls with smaller budgets and fewer people.

Annual reports  —

This is Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Constabulary’s report to the Secretary of State under section 54(4A) of the Police Act 1996. It contains his assessment of the efficiency and effectiveness of policing in England and Wales based on the inspections we carried out between May 2019 and March 2020.

Counter-terrorism  —

Prevent is one of four strands of CONTEST, the UK Government’s strategy for countering terrorism. It aims to tackle the causes of radicalisation, and support and safeguard those at risk of becoming radicalised. As such, the police have a critical role identifying people who are vulnerable to radicalisation and referring them for appropriate support.

Consultations, Corporate documents  —

This consultation is now closed. It asked for your views on HMICFRS’ proposed inspection programme for 2020/21. It was replaced in July 2020 with a revised consultation.

Criminal justice joint inspections, Joint inspection, Offender management  —

This inspection aimed to examine how Integrated Offender Management has been operating since the implementation of the government’s ‘Transforming Rehabilitation’ programme and in a climate of reduced police numbers.

Child protection, Thematic inspection, Vulnerability  —

In early 2014, we began a national programme of child protection inspections. We examine the effectiveness of the decisions made by the police at each stage of their interactions with or for children, from initial contact through to the investigation of offences against them. We also scrutinise the treatment of children in custody, and assess how forces are structured, led and governed, in relation to their child protection services.

Child protection, Research  —

In 2014, HMICFRS started a rolling programme of inspections in every police force in England and Wales, looking at their response to child protection. To better understand the impact of these inspections on policing activity, we commissioned NatCen to carry out independent evaluation of the programme.
