Police officers have the power to take a child who is in danger into a place of safety, or to seek an order to restrict an offender’s contact with children. The police service also has a significant role working with other agencies to ensure the child’s protection and well-being, longer term.

Dealing with child sexual exploitation in a virtual world requires a different style of policing from the conventional methods of the past. This report sets out findings from an inspection of the police service’s efforts to tackle online child sexual exploitation, and concludes that forces need to better understand the nature and potential scale of the this type of offending to ensure that more is done to protect children from harm, and bring perpetrators to justice.
