More about this area
The force says...
Northumbria Police is one of the largest police forces in the country, serving a population of 1.5 million people. It covers a diverse area of more than 2,000 square miles, from vibrant cities to isolated rural areas. It also includes areas which are amongst the most deprived in the country with high levels of unemployment.
There are 3,070 police officers, 1,545 police staff and 194 police community support officers – supported by volunteers, including police cadets and 171 special constables.
In 2018/19, the force received 239,453 calls to 999 and 714,328 calls to 101, dealt with 425,646 incidents and investigated 158,878 crimes.
Northumbria’s clear aspiration is to be outstanding in the delivery of services and protecting the public, especially those who are vulnerable; with a joined up approach including partners as well as the public to deliver a victim-orientated service.
The force is evolving to ensure it is well positioned to deliver services against the changing nature and complexity of crime, whilst improving engagement opportunities with its local communities.
Northumbria Police continues to develop consultation with service users, with a greater focus on vulnerability, which informs service improvements. People living in the force area feel safe, with perceptions of crime and anti-social behaviour remaining low.
Northumbria has the lowest precept of all forces in England and Wales with around 84% of total funding in 2018/19 from central government. Consequently the force has taken the biggest financial cut of all forces in England and Wales through both the 2010 and 2015 Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR) periods. Central Government formula funding for policing in Northumbria has been reduced by 31% in real terms since 2010.
The budget for 2018/19 was £266.245m.
The Force is transforming the way it operates, with a clear focus on protecting the vulnerable; delivering quality investigations; problem-solving; and workforce wellbeing.
