Police officers have the power to take a child who is in danger into a place of safety, or to seek an order to restrict an offender’s contact with children. The police service also has a significant role working with other agencies to ensure the child’s protection and well-being, longer term.

HMICFRS is encouraged by the progress Cumbria Constabulary has made in improving how it protects children, and is assured of the continuing commitment of the constabulary to making further improvements.

HMICFRS has found that while some improvements have been made to how Cleveland Police protects children, it needs to take further action (in some areas as a matter of urgency) to strengthen its safeguarding practice in order to protect adequately those children most at risk.

Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services has today published an assessment on the accuracy of crime recording in North Wales Police, which found that the force records around 88 percent of crimes reported to it.

In November 2015, HMICFRS announced that it would inspect forces’ crime-recording practices in a rolling programme of every force in England and Wales. This rolling programme will be completed over a period of several years and will report on the progress made by forces since the 2014 crime data integrity inspection.
