This inspection reviewed the progress made in Gwent Police since the publication of HMICFRS’s Gwent- National Child Protection Inspection in 2019. It is part of a rolling programme of inspections of all police forces in England and Wales.

PEEL, Spotlight, Thematic inspection  —

The control room is one of the engine rooms of a police force. If it doesn’t have the right systems and processes in place, the force won’t have an accurate picture of demand. This will affect its ability to respond to calls and investigate crimes effectively.

In this report, our findings highlight the challenges that the police service face in handling calls with smaller budgets and fewer people.

Annual reports  —

This is Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Constabulary’s report to the Secretary of State under section 54(4A) of the Police Act 1996. It contains his assessment of the efficiency and effectiveness of policing in England and Wales based on the inspections we carried out between May 2019 and March 2020.

Custody suites  —

This inspection into Leicestershire Police is one of a series on police custody inspections carried out jointly by HMI Prisons and HMICFRS. The programme looks at strategy, treatment and conditions, individual rights and health care. It also contributes to the UK’s response to its international obligation to ensure regular and independent inspection of all places of detention.

Child protection, Joint inspection  —

Between 24 February and 28 February 2020, Ofsted, the Care Quality Commission, HMICFRS and HMI Probation carried out a joint inspection of the multi-agency response to ‘front door’ services, evaluating all forms of abuse, neglect and exploitation, as well as an evaluation of the responses to children’s mental health in East Sussex.

Effectiveness, Fire & rescue services, Revisit  —

During our inspection of Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service, in November 2018, we identified a cause for concern about the service’s fire engine availability and whether its firefighters had the necessary safety critical skills to respond to emergencies. The service submitted an action plan setting out how it would address the cause for concern. This letter sets out the findings of our second revisit to review progress.

Child protection  —

Protecting children is one of the most important tasks the police undertake. Only the police can investigate suspected crimes, arrest perpetrators and monitor sex offenders. Police officers have the power to take a child who is in danger into a place of safety, or to seek an order to restrict an offender’s contact with children. The police service also has a significant role working with other agencies to ensure the child’s protection and well-being, longer term.
