This report is one of a series on police custody inspections carried out jointly by HMI Prisons and HMIC. The inspections look at strategy, treatment and conditions, individual rights and health care. They also contribute to the United Kingdom’s response to its international obligation to ensure regular and independent inspection of all places of detention.

HMIC published an initial report in March 2016 on the child protection work of Essex Police. This concluded that, at the time of the inspection, the force was not adequately protecting all children who were at risk owing to widespread serious and systemic failings. In September and October 2016 inspectors carried out a full re-inspection – the findings are in the report.

In September 2016, HMIC conducted a follow-up inspection of the child protection work carried out by Essex Police, to check on the progress made against a series of recommendations to improve practice from a previous inspection in 2015. In 2015, HMIC found some serious failings in Surrey Police’s response to child protection issues, and made a series of recommendations to improve practice. We returned in 2016 to re-inspect the force, and see if outcomes for children had improved. This report sets out findings from the re-inspection.

Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary has today published an assessment on the accuracy of crime recording in Avon and Somerset Constabulary, which found that the force records only around 90 percent of crimes reported to it. HMIC previously inspected the accuracy of crime recording in Avon and Somerset Constabulary in 2014.

This rolling programme will be completed over a period of several years and will report on the progress made by forces since the 2014 crime data integrity inspection.
