An independent review of neurodiversity in the criminal justice system, commissioned by the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice.

In March 2021, the Home Secretary commissioned Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) to inspect the effectiveness of police engagement with women and girls. Our final report will be published in September 2021.

This review looks at how the police responded to the unique challenges the COVID-19 pandemic placed on preventing and responding to domestic abuse.

Modern slavery, Super-complaint  — 

On 31 May 2019 Hestia made a super-complaint to HMICFRS. This super-complaint is about the policies and practices of all police forces in England and Wales with respect to the standard of support that victims of modern slavery receive.

In July, we announced our intention to inspect the police response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our inspection took a snapshot of policing and assessed what happened from March to November 2020.

The Home Secretary wrote to Sir Thomas Winsor to commission an a thematic inspection into police handling of female victims of crime and engagement with women and girls.

Protest  — 

On 21 September 2020, the Home Secretary commissioned us to conduct an inspection into how effectively the police manage protests. This followed several protests, by groups including Extinction Rebellion, Black Lives Matter and many others.

Spotlight, Stop and search  — 

Stop and search legislation was introduced in 1984. However, 35 years on, forces still do not understand fully the impact of the use of the powers. When the police use their powers disproportionately, it causes suspicion among some communities that they are being unfairly targeted.
