Specialist inspection  — 

HMIC has published the first interim report into the inspection of the Metropolitan Police Service’s review and reassessment of alleged criminal offences arising from the 2014 mayoral election in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.

Following the publication of a report into the Metropolitan Police Service’s preparedness to deal with child protection issues in December 2016, HMIC was commissioned by the Home Secretary to publish quarterly updates. These updates detail the Metropolitan Police Service’s progress against recommendations set out in the 2016 report.

Between 21 and 24 March 2017, Ofsted, the Care Quality Commission, HMI Constabulary and HMI Probation undertook a joint inspection of the multi-agency response to abuse and neglect in Hounslow. This inspection included a ‘deep dive’ focus on the response to children living with domestic abuse.

Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector’s speech on police officer and staff welfare to the Police Federation Annual Conference 2017. In his speech, he talks about the welfare of officers and staff in police forces as a matter of great importance.

The Police Act 1996 requires Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Constabulary to report each year on his assessment of the efficiency and effectiveness of policing in England and Wales. The assessment covers the full breadth of policing work inspected by HMIC, and an overview of police forces in England and Wales. As required by that section, it contains his assessment of the efficiency and effectiveness of policing in England and Wales in respect of the inspection year 2016.

In 2014, the Home Office and College of Policing launched the Best Use of Stop and Search (BUSS) scheme. The scheme aims to achieve greater transparency and community involvement in the use of stop and search powers, and to support a more intelligence-led approach, leading to better outcomes. These reports set out the findings of a revisit inspection of Metropolitan Police Service, which was one of 19 forces found to not be complying with one or two features of the scheme in 2015 inspections.
