COVID-19 —
In July, we announced our intention to inspect the police response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our inspection took a snapshot of policing and assessed what happened from March to November 2020.

On 21 September 2020, the Home Secretary commissioned us to conduct an inspection into how effectively the police manage protests. This followed several protests, by groups including Extinction Rebellion, Black Lives Matter and many others.

Stop and search legislation was introduced in 1984. However, 35 years on, forces still do not understand fully the impact of the use of the powers. When the police use their powers disproportionately, it causes suspicion among some communities that they are being unfairly targeted.

In this inspection, we examined how effectively and efficiently the Regional Organised Crime Units tackle the threat from serious and organised crime.

On 18 December 2018, Liberty and Southall Black Sisters made a super-complaint to HMICFRS.
This super-complaint concerns migrant victims in vulnerable circumstances. They usually arise from crimes of domestic abuse or modern slavery and human trafficking.

Between October 2019 and February 2020, HMICFRS and Her Majesty’s Crown Prosecution Service inspected the police and CPS’s responses to pre-charge bail changes and the use of ‘released under investigation’.
