PEEL: Police effectiveness 2017 - Police Service of Northern Ireland
Summary
As part of the amended Police (Northern Ireland) Act 1998, HMICFRS is required to inspect the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) at least once in every year on its efficiency and effectiveness. The outcomes of the inspections are reported to the Department of Justice, Northern Ireland.
In this inspection of effectiveness in the PSNI, HMICFRS examined the overall question ‘How effective is the force at keeping people safe and reducing crime?’ This inspection focused on three areas of policing:
- How effective is the force at preventing crime, tackling anti-social behaviour and keeping people safe?
- How effective is the force at investigating crime and reducing re-offending?
- How effective is the force at tackling serious and organised crime?
The effectiveness assessment follows on from previous effectiveness and efficiency inspections on PSNI in 2015.
