Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPO)
Orders to deal with a particular nuisance in a particular area that is having a detrimental effect on the quality of life for those in the local community. It can prohibit certain things or require specific things to be done. For example, the intention of the PSPO could be to prohibit people drinking alcohol within a defined area (a controlled drinking zone). The order may state that, on the request of a police officer, police community support officer or authorised person from the council, the person(s) will stop drinking alcohol and will dispose of or surrender any alcohol in their possession when prompted. This is unless they are subject to exemptions, such as being within licensed premises, where the order can’t be enforced.
