On 19 June 2023, the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime wrote to us, requesting an inspection under section 54(2BA) of the Police Act 1996.

Our terms of reference asked us to inspect and consider how effectively the Metropolitan Police Service responds to the sexual and criminal exploitation of children.

During our inspection, we focused on three broad areas:

  • the Metropolitan Police Service’s understanding of the nature and scale of child sexual exploitation and child criminal exploitation;
  • the effectiveness of the Metropolitan Police Service’s response to child sexual exploitation and child criminal exploitation; and
  • how the Metropolitan Police Service supports and safeguards victims and survivors.

This report sets out the findings of the inspection.
