Summary

Protecting children is one of the most important tasks the police undertake. Only the police can investigate suspected crimes, arrest perpetrators and monitor sex offenders. Police officers have the power to take a child who is in danger into a place of safety, or to seek an order to restrict an offender’s contact with children. The police service also has a significant role working with other agencies to ensure the child’s protection and well-being, longer term.

Following the publication of a report into the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS)’s preparedness to deal with child protection issues in December 2016, HMICFRS was commissioned by the Home Secretary to publish quarterly updates. These updates detail the Metropolitan Police Service’s progress against recommendations set out in the 2016 report.

This report is the second of four quarterly updates to be published.

Please note: This inspection was carried out before 19 July 2017, when HMIC also took on responsibility for fire & rescue service inspections and was renamed HM Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services.
