#032/2013 – College of Policing and HMIC publish concordat on working together
The College of Policing and Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) have today published a concordat which sets out how they will work together to achieve the highest possible standards in policing.
The concordat, signed by College Chief Executive, Chief Constable Alex Marshall, and HM Chief Inspector of Constabulary, Tom Winsor, sets out the respective roles of the College and HMIC in relation to standards in policing and how the two organisations will work together.
The concordat explains how the College of Policing and HMIC will work constructively and effectively together by consulting with each other regularly and sharing information and analysis.
One of the core areas of responsibility for the College, as the professional body for policing, is to set standards of professional practice for police officers and police staff based on the evidence of what works. HMIC will use these standards, and effective practice, as part of its work when inspecting police forces.
Chief Constable Alex Marshall said:
“It is in the interests of the public and all those who work in policing that there is a clear understanding of the roles and responsibilities of our two organisations. The concordat provides that clarity, and will enable both the College of Policing and HMIC to work together to achieve the highest possible standards in policing.”
HM Chief Inspector of Constabulary, Tom Winsor, said:
“It is very important that we have in place clear and simple arrangements which spell out how our relationship will work in practice. I am pleased to have signed this concordat, and HMIC looks forward to continuing to work ever more closely with the College of Policing for the improvement of policing.”
In line with the responsibilities of the College to identify, develop and promote good practice based on evidence, HMIC will be transferring the ‘what works’ pages currently hosted on its website to the College of Policing website at http://www.college.police.uk/en/21011.htm
A copy of the concordat can be found at both http://www.college.police.uk/en/docs/hmic_concordat.pdf and www.hmic.gov.uk
