Policing in austerity: Rising to the challenge – Compendium

HMIC is today publishing a compendium of examples of how police forces in England and Wales are approaching how they meet the financial challenge, in order to highlight innovation and share ideas in this area.

In July 2013, HMIC published Policing in Austerity: Rising to the Challenge, which provided a comprehensive analysis of forces’ approaches to the financial challenge, the impact on service delivery, and the risks, challenges and opportunities they face. This is part of HMIC’s annual programme of inspections on value for money.

Following a full review of findings from the 2013 inspection, HMIC has produced this compendium, which brings together interesting, practical examples of how forces are approaching the budget reductions. Many of the examples include more innovative practices such as transforming call handing procedures, collaboration between forces and the implementation of new technologies.

HM Inspector of Constabulary for the Eastern Region Zoë Billingham said:

“During our Valuing the Police inspection in 2013, we identified ways in which forces were working that we believe can be enormously beneficial if shared with other forces and Police and Crime Commissioners.

“This publication is designed to bring together these examples and will hopefully prove to be a valuable source for police forces to learn from, particularly when faced with further financial challenges.”
