About the force

Bermuda is the oldest self-governing British Overseas Territory. Situated in the North Atlantic Ocean, it covers 181 islands over an area of approximately 21 square miles. It has an ethnically diverse resident population of approximately 62,000, with over 95% living in an urban setting.

Bermuda Police Service has between 450 and 500 sworn officers.

HMICFRS’s role in inspecting this force

HMICFRS independently inspects BPS upon invitation.

We agree on the terms of reference with His Excellency, the Governor of Bermuda before carrying out fieldwork.

We ask the questions that we believe the public wish to have answered, and publish our findings, conclusions and recommendations. We use our expertise to interpret the evidence and make recommendations for improvement.
