Stalking and harassment crimes can devastate lives and in some cases they end in death. They are crimes of persistence. And, in a digital world, these crimes can take place all too easily and frequently. HMICFRS inspects how police forces respond to stalking and harassment.

We inspected the police response to online child sexual abuse and exploitation between February and August 2022. We assessed how effectively police forces, the National Crime Agency and regional organised crime units safeguard children, prevent and investigate online child sexual abuse and exploitation.

Violence against women and girls (VAWG) offences are violent and high-harm crimes that disproportionately affect women and girls. This includes domestic abuse, sexual violence, stalking and female genital mutilation.

In January 2014, the Home Secretary commissioned HMIC to carry out an inspection on the welfare of vulnerable people in police custody. This work included, but was not limited to, people with mental health problems, people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds, and children. Our inspection highlighted good practice, identified areas for improvement and made national recommendations.
