#006/2011 – Review of the National Public Order Intelligence Unit
Following HMIC’s January announcement of a review into the operational accountability of undercover work conducted by the National Public Order Intelligence Unit (NPOIU) and how intelligence activity is authorised in law, an External Reference Group (ERG) has been established. The role of the ERG is to challenge the review’s terms of reference, the final report and the conclusions reached, and reassure the public of the comprehensive nature of the review. HMIC’s review lead, Her Majesty’s Inspector of Constabulary for London, Mr Bernard Hogan-Howe, is the Chairman of the reference group, and the members are:
Shami Chakrabarti CBE, Director of Liberty – Until July 2011
Lord Geoffrey Dear, QPM, DL
Baroness Dee Doocey OBE, Chair London Assembly
Professor John Grieve, CBE, QPM BA (Hons), MPhil
Sir David Keene QC, Lord Justice
Trevor Pearce, Director General (interim), SOCA
Stephen Kershaw, Home Office
