Five-step appeal

A communication model that police officers use to manage difficult situations and avoid using force. It helps officers to de-escalate situations and encourage people to comply with their request.

The model includes five steps that progress from a simple request to highlighting personal consequences. The fourth step offers a final chance to co-operate before officers progress to step five and consider using reasonable force as a last resort.
